I got bit by the radio bug in my hometown of Lynchburg, VA where I started out as a Traffic Reporter. I loved my job: first time on the radio and first time on a plane. It was very exciting for a small town girl who didn’t go to college and didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up!
But after a couple of years in the air, and an emergency landing in a corn field due to a vapor lock (a nice way to say we ran out of fuel) I decided that maybe I should try my hand at something else in radio.
I wanted to be a DJ, and before you knew it I had my own show at WJJS in Lynchburg. After doing that for seven years, I decided it was time for me to move on. So, I quit my job and started sending out airchecks everywhere. That’s when I was offered a job in Lancaster, PA...land of Shoo Fly Pie!
I accepted the job and the rest is history!
In no time at all, I fell in love with Lancaster’s rolling farmland, farmers markets, and quaint Amish Community. I was home!
I made a lot of new friends as I started a new life...Dave Russell for one (yes we’ve been friends for 28 years) and Mark McKenzie, whom I eventually married. And Dave was our best man! My husband Mark works on our sister station Newsradio 910 WSBA and we have four children: Melissa, Mackenzie, Taylor and our three-year old Lhassa Apso, Coco Chanel.
I started working for WARM 103.3 in 1982…and I think it’s the greatest job on earth!
What better way to start the day! Well maybe I lied just a little bit...I hate getting up so early! Besides that I have a blast in the morning and get to work with one my best friends in the world, Dave Russell.
In addition I also have a recording studio in my home “Kelly West Media”
My interests include gardening, scrapbooking, travel (I love cruising), dining out, movies, and shopping! There’s a surprise.
